The panels that are handwoven for this cushion are woven on a backstrap loom, a technique that has been passed down from generation to generation for thousands of years! The backstrap loom is inherently sustainable as the weaver uses her body to power the mechanism. Most weavers learn how to weave from their mothers or grandmothers at a young age between 8-12 years old. In this demonstration, white threads are used as the base. Every centimeter the threads are wrapped tightly with a secondary thread. The wrapped white thread is then dyed black. The secondary threads are removed, and what you have left is the little white dots where the black dye couldn’t penetrate the base threads. She first came to Guatemala in 2014 to study backstrap weaving and fair-trade practices for her university internship as a fashion design student, and also to connect with her Guatemalan roots, which she hadn’t grown up fully knowing. She quickly fell in love with the volcanoes, the coffee, and the weavers she met, and ultimately decided to make Guatemala her home. Over the last ten years, Averie has managed product development for ethical brands, building long-term trust between textile tradespeople and design teams. She is a fierce advocate for dignified wages and authentic representation of craftspeople, grounded in organized communication and a down-to-earth style that helps create a more ethical landscape for everyone involved. She’ll be the one guiding you through your design vision, outlining your production tech pack, and organizing conscious marketing campaigns. And she’ll be there to lighten the mood, crack a few jokes, and share her love for Guatemala when you come to visit. Flory Pérez has been the Director of Guatemala for Casa Flor Designs since 2023. She grew up in a home filled with textiles, her mother was a backstrap weaver and her father wove on a floor loom. As a child, she helped her father by running between the weavers’ homes in San Antonio Palopó to relay updates on their orders. Flory didn’t expect to work in textiles; she imagined herself as a professional in an office. But her mother encouraged her to learn to weave, and years later that skill guided her into a position as an accountant for a non-profit supporting backstrap weavers. Her background in both weaving and accounting proved to be the perfect mix, and she eventually fell in love with the craft and the incredible skill of the artisans she worked with. For 20 years, Flory has overseen production and operations for artisan-made goods, acting as a representative for the weavers to ensure they are paid dignified wages and respected for their work. She speaks Kaqchikel, a Maya language, and is essential to the strong relationships we maintain with each artisan community. As Director, she oversees day-to-day operations in Guatemala and manages every workshop and cooperative we partner with. Flory will be the one updating you on your order and traveling with you to meet the artisans, sharing her deep knowledge and her beautiful Guatemalan culture along the way.
